The 2025 State of Methane Emissions Regulations Around the Globe

Methane is responsible for 30% of the global temperature increase since the Industrial Revolution and has a warming potential 80 times greater than carbon dioxide, making it a critical focus in addressing the climate crisis.

The number of companies and countries making commitments to cut methane emissions is rising, taking the form of improved transparency and reporting, emissions standards for equipment and operations, and market-based mechanisms. According to the IEA's Global Methane Tracker 2024, if all methane pledges made by countries and companies are fully implemented on time, they would be sufficient to reduce methane emissions from fossil fuels by 50% by 2030 - a massive achievement for the global energy sector.

In the lead up to the 3rd Annual Methane Mitigation: Technology & Innovation Summit, taking place June 2-4 in Austin, Texas, we have highlighted the major commitments, actions, and policies individual nations are adopting to effectively reduce methane emissions in the energy sector.
